Cold and flu season is now underway in Portland and surrounding areas - Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that a common cold usually includes sneezing, runny nose, sore throat and coughing. Symptoms can last for up to two weeks, sometimes longer.

To promote a healthy and clean environment, our entire staff at Bridgeview Dental give a great deal of attention to sanitation and sterilization in our downtown Portland office at all times, as well as following all requirements for sterilizing instruments and work surfaces. We are happy to see patients with who have the common cold or minor viruses. For patients experiencing a fever 101 or are vomiting, we recommend re-scheduling appointments for the protection of other patients.

Would you believe it's already October? For our staff at Bridgeview Dental, October means one thing: National Dental Hygiene Month. This month, we join the American Dental Hygienists' Association in spreading the word that good dental habits are easy to develop and even easier to maintain.

Here are a few tips to help you build good oral hygiene habits this month:

* Brush your teeth at least twice a day for two to three minutes. Make sure to get the outer and inner surfaces and the chewing surfaces of each tooth.

* Floss once a day to remove plaque from between teeth. Help children learn healthy flossing habits so when they're capable, they know how to do it properly.

* Visit Bridgeview Dental on a regular basis. Children should start seeing a dentist within six months of getting their first tooth.

* Ask us what toothpaste family members should use. Remember that not all toothpaste is appropriate for all ages.

* Eat a healthy diet, rich in fruit and veggies. Avoid sugary foods and eat a high fiber diet of fruits and veggies such as apples and carrots to help prevent tooth decay.

Your teeth are an important part of your body, and keeping them clean helps keep your mouth and your body healthy. By taking care of your teeth, eating a balanced diet, and visiting our convenient Portland office on a regular basis, you can have healthy teeth and an attractive smile throughout your entire life.

Smoking and your oral health, from Bridgeview Dental

Everybody knows that smoking causes lung cancer, but did you also know that smokers and tobacco are susceptible to a variety of oral health problems at a faster rate than non-smokers?

It’s true! Smoking is responsible for almost 75 percent of gum disease in adults. And, similar to smokers, adults who smoke pipes and cigars, as well as those using smokeless tobacco, are just as susceptible to gum disease and other tobacco related health problems.

As soon as you use tobacco products, you become more likely to experience any of these oral-health problems:

• Oral cancer
• Gum disease
• Tooth loss
• Loss of bone in the jaw
• Gum recession
• Delayed/impaired healing process after oral surgery or any other treatment
• Decreased success rate of dental implant (tooth replacement) procedures
• Mouth sores
• Loss of your sense of taste and smell
• Bad breath
• Tooth and tongue stains

If you are interested in protecting your oral health, Drs. Briles and Parks strongly recommend you quit using tobacco products! The following steps are recommended by the Surgeon General to help you quit smoking and using tobacco:

September is National Gum Care Month!

At Bridgeview Dental, we know that gingivitis - the early stage of periodontal disease - can be difficult to recognize. Many people don't recognize the warning signs - bleeding and swollen gums, as a precursor to gum disease. This month, a national campaign is under way to raise awareness about gum health and periodontal disease, and we wanted to help do our part to spread the word!

Dr. John Briles and Dr. Stuart Parks will tell you early recognition and action are the most important steps to health gums, and ultimately a health body, too! Studies are published every year linking oral health, including the gums, to the health of other areas of the body, such as your heart. One of the most important steps to improving the care of your gums is recognizing the warning signs for gum disease.

These can include:

• Gums that appear red or swollen
• Gums that feel tender
• Gums that bleed easily (during brushing or flossing)
• Gums that recede or pull away from the teeth
• Persistent halitosis, or bad breath
• Loose teeth
• Any change in the way teeth come together in the biting position

Periodontal disease, known also as gum disease, is far more common than you may think. Each year, new studies begin to link the effect gum disease can have on the heart, and our staff at Bridgeview Dental have been helping spread the word! One of the simplest steps to achieving healthier gums can be your diet. We recently found a great article outlining several options for healthier gums. Included among the suggestions were:

*Raisins
*Green Tea
*Whole Grains

National Smile Week at Bridgeview Dental!

It’s National Smile Week, and a GREAT time to remind our patients to practice good oral hygiene to keep those teeth shining and happy! This includes brushing and flossing regularly, avoiding foods that can stain your teeth such as tea and coffee and visiting Bridgeview Dental every six months or as recommended.

The American Dental Association, or ADA, recommends the following for good oral hygiene:

• Brush your teeth twice a day with an ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste. Replace your toothbrush every three or four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed. A worn toothbrush won't do a good job of cleaning your teeth.

• Clean between teeth daily with floss or an interdental cleaner. Tooth decay–causing bacteria still linger between teeth where toothbrush bristles can’t reach. This helps remove the sticky film on teeth called plaque and food particles from between the teeth and under the gum line.

• Eat a balanced diet and limit between-meal snacks.

• Visit Bridgeview Dental regularly for professional cleanings and oral exams.

Lastly, a great reason to smile is this: smiling can actually help you live longer according to a new study! So keep smiling and have a great rest of the summer!

When should you call Bridgeview Dental?

If you're facing a dental emergency this summer, Drs. Parks and Briles want you to please give us a call immediately or let us know on our Facebook page. If you need urgent treatment after hours, you can call our emergency number (please ask us for the number if you haven't already done so). We are always here to assist when your dental health is at risk. Below are tips on dealing with urgent dental situations; you may want to display this list on your refrigerator or store it near your emergency phone numbers for easy reference.

Toothache: Rinse your mouth with warm water and inspect your teeth to be sure there is nothing caught between them. If pain continues, use a cold compress to ease the pain. Do not apply heat or any kind of aspirin or topical pain reliever directly to the affected area, as this can cause damage to the gums. Schedule an appointment immediately.

Bitten Lip or Tongue: If you've bitten your lip or tongue severely enough to cause bleeding, clean the bite gently with water and use a cold compress (a cold, wet towel or washcloth pressed firmly against the area) to reduce or avoid swelling. Give us a call to help determine how serious the bite is.

Object Caught In Teeth: If you have something caught between your teeth, use dental floss to gently remove it. Never use a metal, plastic, or sharp tool to remove a stuck object. If you are unable to remove the item with dental floss, give us a call.

Broken, Chipped, or Fractured Tooth: If you've chipped or broken a piece off of your tooth, rinse your mouth with warm water, then use a cold compress to reduce swelling. Try to locate and save the tooth fragment that broke off. Call us immediately.

Knocked Out Tooth: If your tooth has been knocked out, find the tooth and rinse it with water (no soap), taking care to only touch the crown of the tooth (the part you can see when it's in place). If you can, place the tooth back in its socket and hold it in place with a clean towel or cloth. If you can't return the tooth to its socket, place it in a clean container with milk. In either case, call us immediately and/or head to the nearest hospital. If you act quickly, it's possible to save the tooth.

Loose Tooth: If you have a loose tooth, it should be removed to avoid being swallowed or inhaled. And, you probably guessed it: give us a call.

Talkin' gum disease with Bridgeview Dental

Our staff discussed gum disease and the benefits of dairy in your diet last week, and thought we'd follow-up a little more on gum disease today.

It’s easy to tell when you have a cavity, but unfortunately, periodontal disease, or gum disease, can exist in your mouth without you even knowing. In fact, you can have the beginning stages of gum disease without noticing any pain or discomfort. Since gum disease can be undetectable, Drs. Briles and Parks will tell you it’s important to watch for the following warning signs in order to prevent the disease from worsening!

Our team at Bridgeview Dental want to know: is dairy a major part of your diet? If not, it probably should be. A study conducted in 2008 found that regular consumption of dairy products, such as milk, cheese and yogurt, can lower your chances of contracting periodontal disease, or gum disease.

Gum disease is caused by a bacterial infection in the mouth that affects the gums and jaw. Gum disease results in a loss of teeth and bone, and has been connected in studies to certain cases of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, respiratory disease and osteoporosis.

Results of the study show that adults who consume at least 55 grams of lactic acid a day are less at risk for gum disease. Eating dairy is not just healthy for building strong bones, but is also essential for maintaining a strong, healthy mouth. So the next time you reach for a quick snack, choose some cheese or a glass of milk, and remember that with each bite and sip you are preserving your teeth for a lifetime of great smiles!

You might not know it, but May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. In 1983, President Reagan encouraged Americans to include more physical activity into our lives, and the reminder is even more significant today as more and more people are distracted by television, social networking and working more hours. Living an active lifestyle can - and does - improve physical and mental health, productivity and overall well-being. The best part? It doesn’t have to take a lot of time or effort.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has provided these public health guidelines for your reference. The guidelines call for people to exercise one hour every day of moderate intensity physical activity (such as playing sports or brisk walking) or one hour and 15 minutes of vigorous activity (jogging, jumping rope or dancing).

At Bridgeview Dental, we always encourage our patients to exercise or participate in sports (luckily, Portland happens to be one of the more fittest cities in the U.S.) However, we want to remind you to always wear a mouth guard or other forms of mouth or facial protection when doing so. Smile, smile, smile! From Bridgeview Dental

Good news! People with big smiles may live than those who don’t, according to a new study at Michigan’s Wayne State University. Drs. Briles and Parks have known for a long time that positive emotion has been linked to both physical and mental health, but researchers there used information from the Baseball Register to look at photos of 230 ball-players who began their careers in baseball before 1950.

The players' photos were enlarged, and a rating of their smile intensity was made (big smile, no smile or partial smile). The players' smile ratings were compared with data from deaths that occurred from 2006 through 2009. The researchers then corrected their analysis to account for other factors associated with longevity, such as body mass index, or BMI, career length and college attendance.

The researchers found that players who weren't smiling died at the average age of 72.9 years. Players with partial smiles lived to be 75. Those with big smiles, however, lived on average to be 79.9 years old.

Toothbrush Trivia with Drs. Briles and Parks!

People have been brushing their teeth for thousands of years! In fact, the first “toothbrush” was created around 3000BC! Ancient civilizations used a thin twig with a frayed edge to rub against their teeth for cleaning.

The first toothbrush with bristles – similar to today’s toothbrushes – was invented in 1498 in China. Brushes were made out of bone or bamboo with bristles made from the hairs on the back of a hog’s neck.

It wasn’t until 1938 that the first nylon bristle toothbrush was introduced and people quickly became aware of practicing good oral hygiene.

Here are some other interesting facts about your toothbrush (and toothpaste):

• Most people are said to use blue toothbrushes over any other color
• The first toothpaste was used in 500 BC in China and India
• On average, children smile about 400 times per day
• Your toothbrush should be replaced every two months
• The first known toothpaste was used in 1780, Crest was introduced in the US in 1955 and Colgate in 1873

March has arrived, and that can only mean one thing: it’s National Nutrition Month. Every March, Drs. Parks and Briles, as well as thousands of dentists and hygienists around the country, celebrate this occasion, and this year is no different. This March, our dedicated staff at Bridgeview Dental want you to think diabetes, obesity and periodontal disease, and how healthful eating and physical activity may improve your periodontal health. Drs. Parks and Briles know small changes really can make a big difference, and the American Dietetic Association (ADA) has some advice on ways to start improving your diet this March:

• Focus on fruits and veggies: Add a serving each day to one meal and increase it every few weeks. Adding more of these foods into your diet is important whether you buy frozen, fresh or organic.

• Think fresh, think local: From Portland's farmer’s markets to community-supported agriculture, you have many options to find new, fresh foods in our neck of the woods.

• Don't give in: If you have a sweet tooth, have fruit and yogurt for dessert. If you crave a snack in the afternoon, enjoy some trail mix or nuts.

• Make your calories count: When you are choosing between options, focus instead on the one with more of the vitamins and nutrients that you need. Sometimes, foods with fewer calories aren’t always the healthiest options.

• Expand your horizons: Try a fish you’ve never eaten before or find a new vegetable recipe. By testing yourself, you might find new healthy favorites to add to your regular grocery list.

Meet Our Dentists

Dr. John Briles was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. He attended the University of Oregon where he studied General Science. Dr. Briles graduated from Oregon Health Science University Dental School in 1986 and practiced with his father, Dr. Jim Briles, for 12 years. Dr. Briles continues to pursue continuing education in all aspects of dentistry, including cosmetic and implant dentistry.

Dr. Briles is a member of the Oregon Dental Association and is committed to providing the most comprehensive and comfortable care possible to all patients. He has provided dental treatment to low-income families and orphaned children in Cambodia through Northwest Medical teams and donates his time and service to Donated Dental and OHSU Dental School. In 2006, along with Dr. Parks and the entire Bridgeview Dental Team, Dr. Briles began donating time and treatment to the women and children of Shepherd's Door, a local facility that provides care and service to homeless women and children in Portland.

Dr. Briles and his wife, Jackie, have three children and spend their time between Portland and Bend. Dr. Briles enjoys golfing, skiing and has his pilot's license.

Dr. Stuart Parks was born and raised in Salem, Oregon. He attended Portland State University where he majored in Biology and minored in Art. He graduated in 1998 with honors. Dr. Parks graduated in 2002 from the Oregon Health Science University Dental School and has been practicing with Dr. Briles since 2003.

Dr. Parks is a member of the Oregon Dental Association, American Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry and Multnomah Dental Society, and pursues continuing education in all aspects of dentistry. Dr. Parks believes that aesthetics in dentistry is just as important as function and strives to provide his patients with restorations that look as natural as possible. He is also a certified Invisalign practitioner and is able to combine orthodontics with cosmetic dentistry to create the perfect smile.

Dr. Parks has also traveled to Cambodia with Northwest Medical Teams to provide dental care to orphan children. In 2006, along with Dr. Briles and the entire Bridgeview Dental Team, Dr. Parks began donating time and treatment to the women and children of Shepherd's Door, a local facility that provides care and service to homeless women and children in Portland.
